Christensen Meets with WAPA and EPA to Discuss Waiver

(Washington, DC, February 8, 2007) — Delegate to Congress Donna M. Christensen met with officials from the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (VIWAPA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Tuesday to discuss a petition for a waiver that would allow WAPA to utilize a less costly and more reliable emission monitoring system.  A decision is pending on the petition submitted by former Governor Charles Turnbull in 2002.

“The high cost of utilities and service is a major concern for the people of the Virgin Islands and having this issue resolved in WAPA’s favor could result in savings that can be put into plant upgrades, exploration of alternative energy and employee benefits while at the same time meeting all Clean Air standards,” Delegate Christensen said.  “I am committed to continuing to work with the Virgin Islands government, local legislators, EPA representatives and VIWAPA on achieving an outcome that is ultimately favorable to consumers.”

Attending the meeting were WAPA Executive Director Alberto Bruno-Vega, WAPA Director of Planning and Environment Gregory Rhymer, Senator Carlton Dowe, who chairs the VI Legislature’s Rules and Judiciary Committee and is liaison to the White House, environmental consultant Michael Lukey, outside environmental counsel Attorney Robert Smith and senior EPA representatives.
