(Washington, DC)— Congresswoman Gwen Moore (D-Wisc.) today announced that Milwaukee’s General Mitchell International Airport will receive more than $3 million in Recovery Act funds to construct a runway safety area. These funds will allow the airport to build an additional 1,000 feet of safety “overrun” space on the end of its commercial runways. Without this overrun space, the airport is in violation of the Federal Aviation Administration’s requirement of these 1,000-feet buffers.
“This shovel-ready project funded with Recovery Act dollars accomplishes two goals simultaneously,” Congresswoman Moore said. “It brings General Mitchell into compliance with FAA regulations without requiring the airport to spend an arm and a leg, and it puts people to work on construction.”
“Milwaukee County's General Mitchell Int'l Airport welcomes the additional Recovery Act FAA stimulus funding for our Runway Safety Area Project,” said Barry Bateman, Director of General Mitchell International Airport. “This funding will greatly help the airport’s effort to complete the project before the FAA’s mandated timeframe.
