(Washington, DC)— Congresswoman Gwen Moore (D-Wisc.) today announced that General Mitchell International Airport will receive an additional $5,540,040 in Recovery Act funds to help pay for construction on runway safety areas. The airport received more than $3 million in Recovery Act dollars in August for the same project. These funds will allow the airport to build an additional 1,000 feet of safety “overrun” space on the ends of two of its runways. Without this overrun space, the airport is in violation of the Federal Aviation Administration’s requirement of these 1,000-feet buffers.
“I am so glad that General Mitchell Airport will be receiving an additional boost in funding from the Recovery Act that will help finance this high-priority project, which is critical to airport safety and requires a substantial investment of resources,” Congresswoman Moore said. “Because the runway safety areas project is shovel-ready, Mitchell Airport is eligible for these additional dollars that could not be used elsewhere. In addition to creating construction jobs, these Recovery Act funds bring the project closer to completion, and bring Mitchell Airport closer to being in compliance with these FAA regulations.”
“The long-planned Runway Safety Area project will ensure General Mitchell International Airport's early compliance with the FAA's mandate for the nation's airports to have these important safety overruns,” said Airport Director Barry Bateman.
