Moore Announces $95K for West Allis-West Milwaukee School District for After School Programming

(Washington, DC)— Congresswoman Gwen Moore (D-Wisc.) today announced that the School District of West Allis-West Milwaukee will receive $95,000 to operate the Structured Afterschool Fieldhouse Experience (SAFE) program and the Partnership for Afterschool Student Success (PASS) program at 11 elementary schools and three intermediate schools. Each site will serve more than 100 children daily through extended day activities that incorporate academic support, games and recreational activities, enrichment clubs and social and family programming during the afterschool hours. Evening, weekend and summer hours for these programs will also be made available.

“These are great programs that provide engaging activities for students once the school day ends, keeping their minds focused on schoolwork and other safe and positive recreational activities,” Congresswoman Moore said. “It’s in those afterschool hours right between 3 and 7 p.m. and when school is out for the summer that kids really need healthy activities and positive attention. Whether those activities include academic support or sports and art, these programs enrich their minds and their lives, and make sure students have a supervised place that keeps them out of danger.”

The SAFE program will provide enrichment activities through cooking, books, music, dance, drama, computer and art clubs and a variety of recreation activities including organized games, gym, outdoor play and sports. In addition, an eight week summer SAFE camp will provide academic support, enrichment and recreational activities during the summer months. The West Allis-West Milwaukee Recreation Department will serve as the primary partner in this program.

The PASS program will provide academic support at these locations. This will include homework help and individualized reading and math instruction delivered by certified teachers and trained college students. The selected curriculum has been recognized for advancing student learning within extended day programs by the U.S. Department of Education.

“The $95,000 in grant funding will help to underwrite the cost of staff and instructional materials for the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District’s After School Programs,” said Superintendent Kurt Wachholz. “We greatly appreciate Congresswoman Moore’s support in advocating for funding for afterschool programs so that children have opportunities to receive additional academic support and participate in enrichment and recreational activities beyond the school day.”
