In Letter to Moore, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan Confirms Criterion for Race to the Top Funds

(Washington, DC)— Congresswoman Gwen Moore (D-Wisc.) last week received the attached letter from U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan in which the Secretary confirmed that mayoral control is not a prerequisite for or criterion included in the proposed rules for states to qualify for Race to the Top Recovery Act funding. The Secretary also confirmed that the Department of Education has proposed criterion which would make certain states – including those that are legally prohibited from linking teacher pay and evaluations to student achievement data - ineligible for Race to the Top funding. Wisconsin currently has such legal prohibitions in place.

Congresswoman Moore remains committed to working with parents, students, schools, the school board, city officials, the state, and Secretary Duncan, among others, to improve the educational opportunities and outcomes of Milwaukee’s students.
