Moore Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

(Washington, DC)— Congresswoman Gwen Moore (D-Wisc.) made the following statement today, as Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close.

“Each year, September 15 through October 15 is a time to celebrate the rich Hispanic culture that is alive in so many communities across America,” Congresswoman Moore said.

“I am so grateful to represent Milwaukee, a diverse district where our day-to-day life is enhanced by the wide-ranging backgrounds of our residents. We in Milwaukee have the benefit of learning and experiencing the cultural and family traditions – as well as the history -- of our Hispanic community members. We are exposed to Latin American cuisine and music, and we benefit from the entrepreneurial spirit of our Hispanic businessmen and businesswomen, whose businesses are a source of strength for our entire community.”

“This month is also a time to recognize the contribution of Latinos as the largest minority-owned business community in America, with 1.6 million businesses generating annual revenues of more than $221 billion.”

“We should embrace our diversity here in the Fourth Congressional District, for it adds to our strength as a community – a community where our collective fortunes are inextricably linked. We are all affected by the problems facing our Milwaukee Public Schools, and we are all affected by this country’s broken health care system. As our economy moves along the path to recovery, Hispanics, African-Americans, Caucasians and Asians will continue rebuilding what they have lost in this recession -- a job, health care, or a home. By working together as a diverse community blessed with many strengths and talents, I have faith that Milwaukee will reemerge as a center of industry, innovation and entrepreneurship for the 21st Century and beyond.”
