As Congress prepares to recess until after the election, we are going
home with passing only two of the thirteen appropriations bills that fund
our government for fiscal year 2005 that began on October 1. Important
appropriations legislation related to agriculture, energy and water, veterans
affairs, education and transportation, all vitally important to the state
of Arkansas and this great nation, are now being funded by a continuing
resolution through November 20th of this year.
During my travels in the Fourth Congressional District of Arkansas,
I am frequently asked the status of the Transportation Reauthorization
bill, a six year bill that brings a multitude of funds to the state to
complete and repair our highways and bridges. Each time I am asked the
status of this bill I have to tell my constituents the funds are still
held up in a conference committee.
This is absolutely unacceptable. For the first time in 50 years, Republicans
control both chambers of Congress and the Presidency. When given the opportunity
to lead and make positive changes for the American people by passing legislation
for vital programs, nothing has been accomplished.
The Leadership in this Congress has failed to address America's challenges.
For example, legislation related to reauthorization for welfare reform
and higher education has not been resolved. The Transportation Reauthorization
bill that expired last year has yet to be approved, and we still do not
have an energy bill to address the high cost of gasoline and diesel. Creating
economic opportunities, improving education and funding vital infrastructure
projects are too important to be caught up in partisan bickering. As your
United States Representative, I will continue to push for the completion
of these issues before Congress adjourns for the year. |
