| WASHINGTON - The Transportation Security and Infrastructure Protection Subcommittee of the House Homeland Security Committee last week (April 24) reported by voice vote a bill (H.R. 1413) that would establish a trial program at seven airports to screen workers with access to secure areas. Subcommittee Chairwoman Sheila Jackson-Lee said that the bill would designate alternative screening methods and make the screening of employees with unescorted access to airport facilities a high priority. The bill would require at least one of the selected airports to use private screening companies and require at least one of the airports to be a lower-traffic facility as determined by the federal government. The bill would also require the Department of Homeland Security to carry out an operational assessment of all seven airports participating in the program. Jackson-Lee said the bill is “timely because of recent breaches in airport security.” The Subcommittee’s Ranking Republican, Rep. Dan Lungren (R-CA), said that the bill reflects “bipartisan concern and a bipartisan approach” to aviation security. It has not as yet been determined which airports would be part of the pilot program. |
