WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) reminds all eligible Social Security and Veterans Administration beneficiaries that despite the passing of the April 15 tax filing deadline, they have until Oct. 15 to file for an economic stimulus check.
“The stimulus rebate checks are intended to go to those who need them the most,” Stupak said. “I fought hard to ensure seniors and veterans were included in the package, and I want to make sure those checks are getting into the hands of people throughout northern Michigan.”
In order to receive an economic stimulus rebate check, taxpayers must file a 2007 tax return even if they do not owe taxes. Millions of people who normally don’t file a tax return will need to do so this year in order to receive their stimulus payment, including many seniors and veterans.
Seniors and veterans with $3,000 in qualifying income are eligible for an economic stimulus payment and should file a tax return no later than Oct. 15 if they haven’t already. Qualifying income includes Social Security benefits, certain Railroad Retirement benefits, certain veterans’ benefits and earned income, such as income from wages, salaries, tips and self-employment. Many people in this group are eligible for free filing of a 1040A through the IRS.
The IRS has information available on its web site that addresses specific questions about completing the appropriate tax forms. Visit http://www.irs.gov and click on “Stimulus Payment.”
As always, Stupak and his staff are available to assist with questions about the IRS and other federal agencies. Constituents can reach Stupak and his staff toll-free at 1-800-950-7371.
