WASHINGTON – Making good on a gentleman’s wager, Congressman Mike Doyle (D-Pittsburgh) this week delivered Pittsburgh-made sandwiches and beer to Michigan Congressmen Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) and John Dingell (D-Dearborn). Stupak and Dingell made a gentleman’s wager with Doyle on the 2008 Stanley Cup finals, in which the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins four games to two.
“The Red Wings are the pride of Michigan and a perennial powerhouse in the NHL,” Stupak said. “I was disappointed that votes required me to be in Washington for game six rather than in Michigan, but it was still great to see the Wings bring their fourth Stanley Cup in the past 11 years back to Hockeytown.” Stupak and some of his staff donned their Red Wings jerseys and watched the deciding game six along with Doyle and others at the National Democratic Club.
“I was pleased that my good friend Congressman Doyle made good on our wager and delivered delicious Primanti Brothers sandwiches and Iron City beer to me and my staff,” Stupak added. Doyle provided Stupak, Dingell and their staffs with Pittsburgh’s own Primanti Brothers sandwiches and Iron City beer on Wednesday. Had Pittsburgh triumphed over Detroit, Stupak and Dingell had pledged to provide Doyle and his staff with chili dogs from Detroit’s Cheli’s Chili Bar and White Tail Pale Ale. Cheli’s Chili Bar is owned by beloved Red Wings defenseman Chris Cheilos.
“The Red Wings’ victory has been uplifting for not only the city of Detroit but the entire state of Michigan and Red Wings fans everywhere,” Stupak said.
