WASHINGTON – The Department of National Resources’ Land and Conservation Fund is providing over $397,000 to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to enhance two popular northern Michigan recreational outdoor areas.  Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) announced the funding, saying it would improve two sites that are regularly visited by tourists and northern Michigan residents alike.

“Outdoor activities are not only part of the way of life in northern Michigan, recreation contributes greatly to our economy through tourism,” Stupak said.  “I was pleased to see this funding come through as it will enable DNR to enhance two excellent northern Michigan recreational facilities.”

A $224,261 grant has been allocated to the Michigan DNR to develop a new restroom in the campground at Otsego Lake State Park.  The new restroom will be built where an existing structure, originally erected in 1939, currently stands.  A small parking area will be installed next to the building, which will be located in the South Campgrounds loop of the Otsego Lake State Park.  Total cost for the project is expected to be $448,522.

$172,919 has been awarded to the Michigan DNR for development of the Ambrose Lake State Forest Campground Development outside of West Branch.  Stupak said the Michigan DNR would use the funding for a variety of enhancements to camping areas.  The project will involve developing campgrounds, boating facilities and walkways.  The money will also be used to repair and resurface access roads, create parking spaces for over-flow traffic and enhance parking at existing toilets and campgrounds.   The funding will also allow the relocating of campsites, development of new fire rings, picnic tables and improved drainage systems.   Total project cost is expected to be $345,838.

“These grants will mean that the Otsego Lake State Park and the Ambrose Lake State Forest can be enjoyed by more local families and by more visitors,” Stupak noted.  “I am happy to see federal funding made available to assist DNR on these important local projects”
