WASHINGTON – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Marquette County Inc. will receive $183,721 from the U.S. Department of Education. Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) announced the grant, saying it would allow the program to continue to improve the lives of young people throughout Marquette and Alger Counties.

“Big Brothers Big Sisters helps young men and women meet their potential and provides them with important mentoring services,” Stupak said. “I am pleased to see this funding come through for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Marquette County Inc.”

The funding is being provided under the Department of Education’s Mentoring Grants Program. Stupak said the funding covers the period between October of 2007 and September of 2008 and will be used for school based mentoring.  Big Brothers Big Sisters of Marquette County Inc. serves young people in both Marquette and Alger Counties.

“This funding will allow Big Brothers Big Sisters to continue serving children in Marquette and Alger Counties over the course of the next year,” Stupak added.

Jayne Letts, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Marquette County, praised Stupak’s support for the program.

“Congressman Stupak has been a strong supporter of mentoring programs and we appreciate his support of this funding for Big Brothers Big Sisters,” Letts said. “We look forward to continuing to work with him to secure funding so that Big Brothers Big Sisters of Marquette can keep providing valuable services to young people in Marquette and Alger counties.”

The Big Brothers Big Sisters Mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with measurable impact.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Marquette County, Inc provides a program to enhance the life experience of children and their families by helping children grow into responsible adults by establishing one to one relationships with volunteer mentors who offer friendship, emotional support, guidance and companionship. The Marquette program was formed in 1970.
