WASHINGTON – This weekend, the U.S. House of Representatives passed its Fiscal Year 2008 Defense Appropriations bill.  Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) voted for the legislation, noting that the bill included $9 million in funding for several important projects throughout northern Michigan.  Stupak requested the funding for the northern Michigan projects and said it would benefit local jobs, while strengthening America’s defense.

“This legislation funds several job creating initiatives in northern Michigan that will benefit our nation’s defense,” Stupak said.  “I am pleased the House included these projects in their bill, and I will work to retain this funding as the legislation goes forward.”

The legislation includes $4 million in funding to continue research and testing of the Advanced Thermal Management System.  The Advanced Thermal Management System, developed by Engineered Machined Products (EMP) of Escanaba, improves fuel efficiency and emissions on the Army’s medium duty tactical vehicles.

The bill includes $4 million for Century 3+ in Traverse City.  The company will use the funding to continue development on creation of lightweight ceramic composites that can be used to improve ballistic armor and reinforce surfaces on brakes for overland and armored military vehicles.

The measure also designates $1 million for VIO, Inc. of Marquette, Michigan.  VIO is developing a lightweight video recording system that military personnel will be able to inconspicuously wear on their clothing.

“All of these groundbreaking projects will help keep American troops safe,” Stupak noted.  “I am proud this work is being accomplished by northern Michigan entrepreneurs and employees.”

House passage of the bill is only a first step in the appropriations process.  The bill must now undergo consideration in the Senate.  While specific projects in the appropriations bill can be challenged at anytime, including during the conference committee process, Stupak said he will fight to protect funding in the Defense Appropriations bill that is important to northern Michigan.
