WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Congressman Bart Stupak is encouraging Northern Michigan youth to take the challenge and get involved in the Congressional Award program. The Congressional Award program is the U.S. Congress’ highest honor for youth and provides a structure to learn the value of service, personal development, fitness, and citizenship.
“I encourage young people across Northern Michigan to make a difference in their life, and the lives of those around them by participating in the Congressional Award program,” Stupak said. “This program is not about competing against others. Rather it is a way for youth to challenge themselves by working to meet personal goals while opening themselves to new experiences.”
The Congressional Award program is open to all youth ages 14-23. There is no minimum grade point average requirements and the program accommodates youth with special needs and disabilities. Participants must set goals in following four program areas:
- Voluntary Public Service: These activities must be performed without pay, compensation or school credit and must perform a direct service.
- Personal Development: These activities challenge participants to pursue a new interest or advance to another level in an ongoing interest.
- Personal Fitness: Participants must set and achieve a measurable goal in a physical activity. Both team sports and individual activities are acceptable.
- Expedition/Exploration: Participants must interact with the wilderness or immerse themselves in an unfamiliar culture.
To earn a Congressional Award, participants must complete required hours for all four of the program areas. There are six levels of Congressional Awards: Bronze, Silver and Gold Certificates and Bronze, Silver and Gold Medals. The minimum number of hours needed to complete each program area increases with each level of the program. Participants can work at their own pace, and participation in some group activities or organizations, such as Scouts and 4-H, may count toward the Congressional Award.
“The Congressional Award program is a terrific opportunity to broaden horizons and develop life-long skills and knowledge,” Stupak said. “I strongly encourage young people across the First District to take the challenge and participate in the Congressional Award program.”
