WASHINGTON – Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) addressed the Michigan State University (MSU) hockey team at a welcome reception held in Washington this week.  The team, which was in Washington to be honored at the White House for their national championship, met with Stupak and other Members of the Michigan Congressional delegation at a reception on Capitol Hill.

“Coach Comley and the entire MSU hockey team deserve our congratulations and admiration,” Stupak said.

During the reception, Stupak was honored to receive a hockey stick signed by the entire MSU hockey team.  Earlier this year, Stupak authored and introduced a resolution honoring the Spartans.  In April, Michigan State defeated Boston College in championship 2007 NCAA Men’s “Frozen Four” in Scottrade Center in St. Louis.  The resolution passed the House on May 7th.

“Rick Comley has become only the third coach in college hockey history to win national titles at two Division I Universities, and has earned over 700 career wins,” Stupak noted.  “Coach Comley is a friend of mine and I am delighted to congratulate him on this critical victory.”

“Not only did the Spartan hockey team make fans across our state proud, but the way the entire MSU community came together in support of these young men was a testament to the entire university,” Stupak added.

Comley last won the NCAA Championship with Northern Michigan University (NMU) in 1991.  NMU, located in Marquette, Michigan, is the largest university in Stupak’s district.  Comley was the head hockey coach at NMU for 26 years.
