Straight Talk With Sam
Rationing is the Consequence

As I travel the district this August I have been impressed by how many constituents have read the 1,000-plus page health care bill. Many bring a copy of the bill with them or a page or two that they have a question about. It makes me think we might have more people in the Sixth District who have read the bill than there are in Washington.

Far from being “un-American”, my constituents have well-informed questions. Many want to know what this bill will mean for them and their family. The short answer is that it will lower the quality of health care in this country.

Effectively this plan will mean the rationing of health care. As the public option quickly becomes the only option for health insurance, more and more people will be dependent on the government for their health care.

We need to look no further than European countries who have implemented systems of government run health care. There, rationing has meant waiting lines and lessened the quality of health care. In fact, the Wall Street Journal reported that Britain’s National Health Service uses a metric to decide what procedures the government will approve.

Inevitably this will mean that a government bureaucrat will be making decisions about your health care. The issue of who decides what treatments are allowed for which patients is what scares many of us the most.

The message from constituents in the Sixth District is crystal clear. They do not want to put bureaucrats in charge of their health care.
