of accuracy. The requested funding would validate technology for a point-of-care version of the breast cancer breath test.
This project would validate a point of care breath test for breast cancer detection. Menssana Research has successfully tested a breath test that can predict breast cancer with a high degree
Benefit to DoD
A breast cancer breast test will result in significant cost savings for DoD by lowering the cost and increasing the frequency of early detection. The cost of breast cancer to DoD's health care system is high nearly $100 million since 2005. A breath test could eliminate the need for a mammogram about 85% of the time, and would cost about half as much as a mammogram. Breath tests will increase the frequency of early detection, because compared to mammograms, they are safe, painless and non-invasive. More frequent early detection in turn will mean lower costs, since it is far more expensive to treat breast cancer in its later stages than when it is detected early. Apart from the cost savings, by increasing early detection, breath tests will mean fewer deaths of service members and their family members from breast cancer.
