Statement By Congressman Anthony D. Weiner Commending the Development of a Class Action Lawsuit Against Gun Manufacturers

I applaud the White House for today's announcement that it will work with local housing authorities to develop a class-action lawsuit against gun manufacturers.

The NRA bought off the Republican-controlled Congress lock, stock and barrel, so the courts may be the best remaining hope to keep guns from kids and out of public housing. But the White House should settle for nothing less than an enforceable "Gun Maker Code of Conduct" that governs the sale and distribution of all firearms products. This Code should mandate the sale of smart-guns, trigger locks, and should crack down on gun dealers who deal only in death.

This week's tragic shooting in Oklahoma was yet another reason it's time to say, "enough is enough" to gun dealers. Change how you do business, or we'll see you in court.

Congressman Weiner is a member of the House Subcommittee on Crime and was previously Chairman of a New York City Council Panel on Safety in Public Housing
