"Today, a bipartisan majority of the House of Representatives came together to reflect the sense of the American people on the momentous question of human cloning. While the public believes that biomedical research is vital, it regards the development of human embryos for experimental purposes as scientifically unnecessary and ethically unacceptable. I am proud to be among those who favor prohibiting the cloning of human beings for any purpose.
"The Cloning Prohibition Act 0f 2003 which passed the House today will not hinder adult or embryo stem cell research that is necessary for medical purposes and advancements. However, it will draw a bright boundary between acceptable scientific research and the creation and exploitation of human life for the immediate needs and desires of the current generation. As a society we have a responsibility to think through the consequences of our actions both for our own times and those generations who will come after us. Allowing science to manufacture human life for even seemingly noble purposes is a practice we should neither contemplate nor initiate. |
