Congressman Cole Applauds Bush
on State of the Union Address

"At a time when America needs strong leadership at home and abroad, President Bush once again demonstrated his ability to rally the country and chart a bold course toward peace and prosperity. The President ably and clearly defined the challenge we face at home in regard to our economy, our health care system and our quality of life. He offered specific proposals to improve the lives of every American. If Congress works with him, we will revive our economy, repair our health care system and unleash the creative energy of our people.

"Most importantly, President Bush left no doubt that America has the strength and determination needed to confront and defeat those who threaten the peace and security of the world. Almost 150 years ago Lincoln called America 'the last best hope on earth.' President Bush demonstrated that maxim remains true in our time.

"The challenge now rests with the Congress to put aside partisan divisions and parochialisms and work with the President to address the problems we are facing. I am confident members of both parties can and will rise to the occasion. History has given us great responsibility and great opportunities. When the dust has settled and the debates are concluded, I believe the 108th Congress, working with the President, will go down as one of the most productive in modern times.
