Supports a sports-based youth development program that works to reduce the drop-out rate, illiteracy, and obesity among youth in urban, low-income communities. Funds would launch the after-school program in four of Portland’s public elementary schools in fall 2009, providing approximately 120 at-risk youth with the opportunity to participate on soccer teams and develop literacy skills. To play, students must commit to applying the leadership, teamwork, and commitment they develop on the soccer field to academic pursuits in the classroom. On alternating days of the week, the teams meet with a writing coach, who will engage them in activities focused on poetry, creative expression, and spoken word.
