Obesity Prevention and Reduction for Rural Communities

Supports a program that is developing and evaluating a community-based, culturally relevant prevention and intervention public health service model to address obesity and diabetes in rural and underserved populations by linking local health departments and public medical clinics with community resources.  Funds would establish two or three rural pilot projects to implement obesity prevention interventions for community health center clients in Linn and Benton counties; implement and evaluate obesity prevention/treatment programs, including clinic/community-based education diabetes prevention programs, delivered by culturally appropriate health educators and/or nutrition educators; design and implement the train-the-trainer program for rural clinics/communities to enable continued outreach opportunities into the future; produce socially, culturally, linguistically, and age-appropriate outreach materials and publications to enable additional sites to use the intervention to assist underserved communities in the future; and prepare to expand the rural obesity prevention program to other rural communities.
