Supports an existing project to map the geology of the Oregon Territorial Sea to identify and mitigate geologic hazards, including tsunamis, earthquakes, landslides, and coastal erosion, as well as to find geological resources such as groundwater. Funds would employ out-of-work commercial fishermen, who would use their boats to conduct surveys of the sea floor; scientific staff, who would oversee the data collection and product development; and undergraduate and graduate students , who would serve as field assistants. The goal of the project is to create more effective tsunami modeling, wave energy facility siting, telecommunications cable laying, marine habitat identification, and shoreline erosion modeling.
