Supports a national infrastructure of more than 200 writing project sites, including five in Oregon, that provide high-quality teacher professional development to improve the teaching of writing and the literacy of students from kindergarten through college. Improving writing skills helps students read, solve problems, and better understand concepts in every part of the curriculum, preparing them to participate in our global economy. Oregon’s five sites, located at Eastern Oregon University, Lewis & Clark College, Southern Oregon University, University of Oregon, and Willamette University, operate in a public-private collaboration with school districts, teachers, and Oregon foundations to serve all areas of the state. Funds would be used for programs in teacher development, quality writing, and research to help improve student performance in writing.
