"The death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is a significant achievement in the War on Terror. Zarqawi was the operational commander of the terrorist movement in
Iraq and proudly led a campaign of car bombings and suicide attacks that has taken the lives of many innocent Iraqis and American troops. The skill and bravery of the men and women of our armed forces were on display as they worked with their Iraqi counterparts to track down this brutal terrorist and end his murderous campaign.
The scenes of terrorist bombings and reports of U.S. casualties are constant reminders of the cost of trying to strengthen democracy in Iraq. The appointments of the new Iraqi Ministers of Defense and the Interior today are positive steps towards advancing a united, free, and democratic Iraq. We remain committed to working with the Iraqi people and our coalition partners to bring peace and security to Iraq and the region. Ultimately, a more democratic Middle East would offer an alternative to the tyranny and hateful ideologies that have bred terrorism."
