Statement on the Shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords

"I am deeply saddened and horrified by the senseless attack on my colleague Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, members of her staff, and other citizens that took place yesterday in Arizona.  Leslie and I offer our prayers to all the victims of this tragedy and their families. This was not just a horrific attack on a dedicated public servant and her constituents, but was also an attack on one of the most important cornerstones of our system of government - the ability of elected officials to reach out to the citizens they serve. It is imperative that we not allow this tragic incident to prevent elected officials from fulfilling their duty to well represent their fellow citizens."
