Multiple Options Helps Students Afford College

September 25, 2009
More students are finding it difficult to afford college as the economy slows and tuition rates climb. Multiple student loan options increases competition among lenders, making it easier for students who need assistance to pursue a degree.

On September 17, I voted against the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act, H.R. 3221, because it would eliminate the Federal Family Education Loan Program, decreasing the number of options students have to pay for college. This measure passed the House with similar language pending in the Senate. I also voted for an amendment to a spending bill to prohibit federal funds from being used to eliminate these private sector partnerships but, unfortunately, it failed.

Pursuing a higher education is one of the most important investments someone can make, personally and professionally. As the parent of both a recent graduate and student at a Tennessee university, I know firsthand the financial burden of higher education. I will continue working towards a more conservative approach to providing resources for those who want to further their education.
