Don't Raise Federal Gas Tax

February 4, 2008

Maintaining our infrastructure is a legitimate role of the federal government.  The recent bridge collapse in Minnesota is an example of why we must invest more in our transportation networks. But raising the federal gas tax is not the right thing to do at this time.

The Federal Highway Trust Fund is at risk of being depleted by next year. The Secretary of Transportation, along with a 12 member panel, has proposed a federal tax increase on gasoline to sustain this fund. There is no question that we have an infrastructure problem, but now is the worst time to propose any new taxes as our economy is slipping and sliding towards a recession.

While I am not a member of the Transportation Committee, I will work with my colleagues to make sure our roadways remain safe without placing an undue burden on taxpayers.
