Reducing the Cost of Hearing Aids

May 13, 2009
1.4 million children and more than 10 million older Americans suffer from hearing loss. If left untreated, it can lead to lost wages, injury and further health complications. Unfortunately, the cost of hearing aids can be unexpectedly high.

Only 23% of the people who could benefit from hearing aids have them. Those who go without usually do so because of financial constraints. Changing the tax code can be an effective way to make hearing aids more affordable. The Hearing Aid Assistance Tax Credit Act that I am cosponsoring, would give families with hearing-impaired children and those 55 years-of-age or older a $500 tax credit towards the purchase of hearing aids.
