Abandoning our plans to perfect a missile defense system would make our nation less secure and endanger the lives of all Americans. President Obama's position caught some of our newer and most important allies off guard and confused many in the world. Recent missile tests by North Korea and disturbing threats from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, combined with the growing number of countries that have deployed or are developing weapons of mass destruction makes our missile defense systems more important than ever.
Congress and the President must work on several fronts to protect our nation from those who wish to do us harm. Although no single technology can solve all of our security needs, a network of missile defense systems would help protect Americans and our allies. I have consistently supported legislation to develop and improve our ability to destroy a missile launched by a rogue state or terrorist before it strikes American soil. Here is a Congressional Research Service report that I hope you find helpful.
One of the primary reasons our Founding Fathers created the federal government was to provide for a strong national defense to protect our lives, freedoms and prosperity. We must have a system in place that warns our enemies that any launch against America or her allies will be unsuccessful and far too risky to attempt.
