North Korea’s recent actions clearly violate United Nations’ sanctions and are a tangible demonstration of the threat this nation poses to the United States and our allies. While North Korea disputes claims that the launch was a missile test, the same technology used to launch a satellite can also deliver a nuclear weapon.
Since 2002, North Korea has produced enough plutonium for at least six nuclear warheads and has successfully conducted a nuclear test. The international community has tried to engage them through Six Party Talks, but Pyongyang continues to expand its nuclear weapons arsenal.
This defiant act provides an opportunity for the United States to send a clear message to Kim Jong Il and other rogue nations that the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction will not be tolerated. We must remain resolute in our diplomatic efforts and continue developing and improving our missile defense system.
