Protecting Rights of Medical Workers

April 9, 2009
Doctors and nurses face tough decisions everyday when caring for patients. The U.S. has a longstanding policy of allowing healthcare workers to choose whether to perform or participate in procedures that violate their moral or religious beliefs, such as abortion. But vague protection laws have placed health care workers at risk of compromising their beliefs for fear of losing their job or federal funding.

In 2004, Congress passed a law to protect pro-life medical professionals, but regulations were needed to enforce it. In one of its last acts, the Bush Administration implemented the necessary policies to make sure health care providers are not forced to violate their moral beliefs. I have joined my colleagues in sending a letter to President Obama urging him not to rollback these important provisions.

Our nation’s founding fathers recognized certain inalienable rights. The Constitution protects life and religious freedom. I have sworn to uphold the Constitution and I will continue to fight for the rights of pro-life medical workers.
