Amount Requested: $555,000.00

This project will support the construction and/or renovation of outdoor educational centers for 190 elementary schools in the Houston Independent School District.  Since the district resides in an urban setting, many students do not have access to nature and outdoor activities. With 80% of students considered economically disadvantaged, many parents cannot provide supplemental learning opportunities for their children after or during the summer break. With the building of outdoor educational centers that are designed to meet the district’s curriculum objectives, teachers will be able to design outdoor science lessons to increase students’ awareness of nature and provide hands-on learning experiences. HISD and its local partner are willing to support the project with the required local matching funds.  The project will incorporate design features and improvements that will enhance the schools’ aesthetic qualities while creating learning-rich environments for students.
