Amount Requested: $2,000,000.00 The City of Houston is seeking funds to redevelop a landfill adjacent to Sunnyside Park. Redevelopment of this property will mitigate environmental hazards and add to the recreational facilities available to the citizens of Houston. Sunnyside Park contains a closed former landfill formerly known as the “Holmes Road” site. The 257-acre landfill is part of a total of approximately 300 acres owned by the City at this location. The property includes the existing Sunnyside Park on the northeast corner. Redevelopment options are being considered, especially trails. The site is a property in the City's Brownfields Redevelopment Program. With grant funds provided by the EPA, the Brownfields Program performed a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) on 257 acres of the landfill in 2003, and a Phase II ESA regarding those acres in 2004. A Supplemental ESA Phase II was performed in 2005 on the north portion along Bellfort Street and on the east along Comal Street. The ESAs found that methane gas is currently being generated from the landfill waste. |
