ON ARTICLES OF IMPEACHMENT

Washington, D.C.- "The thorough review and discussion of hours and pages of testimony, documents, depositions, videos and other sources of information in a case as serious and as solemn as an impeachment inquiry of President Clinton, has now presented to this country a circumstance that has occurred only once before--the consideration of impeachment of a President on the floor of the U.S. House.

"The information that has been made available to us all, and has received thorough scrutiny by the Members of the House Judiciary Committee, leads me to believe with great regret that it will be in the best interest of our country to pass these articles of impeachment in the House. However, debate on acts of this magnitude--two charges of perjury, obstruction of justice and abuse of power--deserves and will receive my full attention on the House floor before my vote is cast.

"The House Committee on the Judiciary passed four articles of impeachment against President William Jefferson Clinton Friday and today. The full House will now consider these articles on the floor no sooner than 72 hours after committee passage. It is likely that action will take place on Thursday.
