Congressional Internship Program Information

The information below pertains to internships in both Lucas' Washington and Oklahoma office, unless noted otherwise.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
OBJECTIVE

The purpose of the intern program is to enable students from the state of Oklahoma to participate in the legislative process by working in Congressman Lucas' congressional office. All interns will be appointed by Congressman Lucas and will abide by set office policies of conduct.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
CALENDAR

Four classes of interns will work in the Washington office of Congressman Lucas. Interns shall be informed of appointment no later than 30 days before their assigned start date. General session dates are as follows:

Spring: late January through early May (14 weeks)
Summer I: mid May through June (6 weeks)
Summer II: July through mid August (6 weeks)
Fall: late August through December (14 weeks, not including Thanksgiving or Christmas)

Application deadlines:

Spring: December 1st
Summer: April 1st
Fall: July 1st

If necessary, the office will work around the schedule of a prospective intern who meets the other internship requirements but is unable to fulfill the time obligations listed above.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be of college or graduate school age, working toward a degree
  • Submit a resume
  • Fill out the application form
  • Include two letters of recommendation

-----------------------------------------------------------------
JOB DESCRIPTION

Working in a congressional office is a unique experience that provides many challenges to interns. Interns in our office will be asked to perform several duties that are an integral part of our success.

  • Assist legislative staff in research (DC interns only)
  • Attend committee hearings (DC interns only)
  • Assist with research & response to constituent mail
  • Open and sort constituent mail
  • Give Capitol VIP Tours to constituents from the District (DC interns only)
  • Answer phones and copy documents
  • Summer interns participate in U.S. Congress' Intern Calendar activities with other interns (DC interns only)

*Greater responsibilities will be dependent upon the intern's performance. Interns will not be limited to routine work.

----------------------------------------------------------------
COMPENSATION/COURSE CREDIT

Internships in Congressman Lucas' office are unpaid. Contact your college advisor to discuss receiving course credit or financial assistance in exchange for your services to our office. All DC interns are responsible for transportation to and from Washington, D.C., and finding appropriate room and board during their stay. Our office will provide any information that may help in reducing the costs of living. (Also see Housing section below)

-----------------------------------------------------------------
ACTIVITIES (DC Interns Only)

A core activities program will be a part of the Lucas Intern Program. These activities shall enable interns to build a better relationship with the Congressman, staff members, and fellow interns. Some of these activities will be for interns only, others may be staff inclusive. All activities should reflect the mission of both the Congressman and set office policies.

Capitol Tour Orientation: On one of the first days of the program, all interns will take an instructive tour of the U.S. Capitol. This will help orient the intern around Capitol Hill; it will also serve as a basis for giving constituent tours of the Capitol. A supplemental tour of the Capitol Hill area will be given by the intern coordinator. This will eliminate interns getting lost when they are completing assignments.

White House Tour: One morning, all interns will have a guided tour of the White House.

Tours of the Following:

  • FBI
  • National Archives
  • The Kennedy Center
  • The State Department
  • Mount Vernon
  • The Supreme Court
  • The Bureau of Printing and Engraving
  • Arlington Cemetery

*Some of the activities listed above are dependent on the season. Many tours have been suspended due to heightened security, but we will do our best to schedule as many as possible.
