Congressman Lynch believes that America’s veterans should receive the finest medical care following their heroic and dedicated service to our nation. Accordingly, Congressman Lynch continues to work in the U.S. House of Representatives to ensure that America fulfills its commitment of care to veterans and their families.
As a senior Member of the House Oversight Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs, Congressman Lynch continues to participate in the Subcommittee’s ongoing investigation of the living conditions and the bureaucratic hurdles faced by veterans at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and other VA medical facilities throughout the nation.
In addition, Congressman Lynch recently organized and conducted a meeting between the Massachusetts Congressional Delegation and Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jim Nicholson to express the Delegation’s opposition to the proposed consolidation of treatment services at four Boston-area veterans hospitals. The proposal stems from the Capital Asset Realignment for Enhanced Services (CARES) Process, which began in 2004 as a study of how to modernize VA facilities throughout the country. Congressman Lynch and the other members of the Massachusetts Delegation waged a two-year fight against a previous proposal to close all four Boston-area hospitals and create a single medical center for the Boston area. The Department of Veterans Affairs ultimately agreed with the Delegation and rejected that earlier proposal in July 2006.
Furthermore, in the 110th Congress, Congressman Lynch supported several bills that will greatly impact veterans care and services. On January 31, 2007, Congressman Lynch voted in support of House Joint Resolution 20, a bill that included $32.7 billion in appropriated funds for the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) to be used for various veterans health care programs. On March 28, 2007 Congressman Lynch supported The Wounded Warrior Assistance Act of 2007 (H.R. 1538), a bill that creates a new system of case managers, advocates and counselors for service members returning from combat overseas in order to assist veterans in obtaining the medical care they need and in navigating the military's healthcare bureaucracy.
