Washington, D.C. – On October 3rd, Reps. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) and Michael Honda (D-CA) introduced the Fixing the Federal Voting Assistance Program Act (H.R. 7265), which would strengthen oversight of the federal office charged with helping overseas military and civilian voters.

WASHINGTON, DC – The final version of the “The Debbie Smith
Reauthorization Act of 2008” (H.R. 5057), legislation that would extend
an important federal DNA backlog processing program through FY 2014,
has passed the House by a voice vote. It will now be sent to the
president for his signature.

Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney introduced landmark legislation to elevate the Census Bureau to the status of an Independent Agency in the federal government hierarchy, moving it outside the bowels of the massive Commerce Department. Joining Maloney as original cosponsors the “Restoring the Integrity of American Statistics Act of 2008”, H.R. 7069 are Charles Gonzalez (D-TX), William Clay (D-MO), Michael Honda (D-CA), and Henry Waxman (D-CA).

Mrs. MALONEY of New York. Madam Speaker, this is a difficult vote.
This bill is not popular, but it is necessary. A wholesale failure of
the banking system would be the financial equivalent of an economic heart attack, the consequences of which could severely affect the lives and livelihoods of millions of ordinary American citizens.
