Statement
by Congressman Marshall on President Bush's State of the Union Address
(Washington , DC) –Let me comment upon two
major issues addressed in tonight's address. First, I agree with the
President that whatever we do with Social Security ought to be guided
by some basic principles. We should not cut guaranteed benefits and
should assure that Social Security continues to act as a true safety
net that keeps as many of our seniors as possible out of poverty. I
look forward to working with the President along with Democrats and
Republicans in Congress to create a plan that keeps all of America’s
promises.
Secondly, I applaud the President's firm and unwavering resolve to
see the job done in Iraq. He is right to reject calls for an artificial
timetable to withdraw our troops. America must do all it can to assist
the Iraqi people as they secure their freedom; the brave people who
embraced democracy this week deserve nothing less.
