How do I apply for Social Security Benefits?
- You can apply for Supplemental, Disability, or Retirement benefits online, or you can initiate the claims process by calling an SSA representative at 1-800-772-1213, or TTY phone at 1-800-325-0778.
- To prepare for the disability claim interview, you may want to print the adultor child Disability Starter Kit.
- In general, to qualify for disability benefits, you must be unable to work and your disability must be expected to last at least one year or result in death. You must also have worked long enough in recent years under the Social Security system.
What happens if my claim is denied?
- If your first application is denied, you will have 60 days to request a reconsideration of your claim.
- If the reconsideration is denied, you will be given 60 days to request a hearing before an Administrative Law Judge. The current situation in this region indicates at least one year before your hearing is scheduled.
- If the Administrative Law Judge denies your claim, you can appeal the decision to the Appeals Council within 60 days of receiving the written decision. An Appeals Council review may last as long as two years before a final decision is issued.
- Throughout these processes, I am happy to monitor the progress of your appeal and notify you of any changes.
Do I need legal representation during the claims or appeals processes?
The choice is yours. An advocate can help you when you do business with Social Security, but you are not required to have an attorney or advocate. Organizations are available to help you find an attorney or give you free legal services if you qualify. Your Social Security office has a list of organizations that can help you.
What are the eligibility requirements for Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?
