Congressman McDermott's interest in trade also is rooted in the fact that Washington State is the most trade-dependent state in the nation.

Congressman McDermott has been a tireless advocate for opening US markets to developing countries. He is an author of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), passed in 2000. AGOA has been called the most important development between Africa and the North in the last 400 years.

Also see McDermott's Africa Issues page.

Trade Promotion Authority Act, or "Fast Track"

Congressman McDermott did not vote for the Trade Promotion Authority Act, or "Fast Track" as it is commonly called, because of grave concerns that the Bush Administration would negotiate trade agreements with provisions similar to NAFTA's Chapter 11. Unwillingness by Republican members of the House of Representatives to compromise on other important issues, such as adequate labor and environmental standards and protecting the ability of our government and to enact laws to protect its citizenry, made the 2002 Fast Track legislation too deeply flawed to win his support.

Congressman McDermott is a Member of the House Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over international trade policy.
