McDermott Statement about Hurricane Katrina
For Immediate Release - September 2, 2005

We are shocked and saddened by the death, destruction and aftermath from Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and the surrounding areas. We in Seattle know a lot about the vulnerability associated with a natural disaster and I speak for everyone in Seattle when I say we extend our deepest sympathies and will do everything we can to help.

Clearly, the situation on the ground right now is unstable and disturbing. I'm not going to second guess any federal agency or leader trying to cope with a crisis of this magnitude. I share the horror and disbelief of my constituents over the images we have all seen on television.

There will be plenty of time -later- to question the adequacy of plans to deal with a catastrophe like this. Right now we have to act quickly and decisively to overcome America's worst natural disaster. If more resources are needed to cope with this crisis, as it appears from afar, we expect the federal agencies and leaders in charge to increase the resources and response.

Congress will take up emergency legislation today to make a down payment on a massive rescue and restoration effort. I expect nothing less than a bi-partisan, united effort in the House and Senate.

This is a time to stand together. We can all do something- contributing even a dollar or two from everyone in Seattle would create a significant fund to help relief organizations like the Red Cross that rely on our contributions. Do what you can and then stretch to do more.

One final note; with the disturbing images we are seeing, I urge parents to talk to their children openly about the tragedy we are witnessing. As a doctor and psychiatrist, I know that fear can be overcome by hope and understanding.
