McDermott Challenges House Colleague in Super Bowl
January 24, 2006
For Immediate Release
Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA), today challenged Rep. Mike Doyle to a friendly wager on the outcome of the Super Bowl XL matching the Seattle Seahawks against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Rep. McDermott’s 7th congressional district encompasses the City of Seattle and Rep. Doyle’s district includes the City of Pittsburgh.
“I’ve heard of the vaunted Steel Curtain in Pittsburgh,” McDermott said, “but curtains are meant to be opened, and the Seahawks will open- and shred- the Steel Curtain on February 5, in Detroit.”
Rep. Mike Doyle offered a different point of view. "The Steelers have defied expectations and the home field advantage in the post-season play-offs," Congressman Doyle said. "They’re clearly destined to win Super Bowl XL."
"After caging the Bengals, rounding up the Colts, and corralling the Broncos, the Steelers will net the Seahawks in the Super Bowl," Doyle said, adding "I just need to check to make sure that’s allowed under the Endangered Species Act."
McDermott pointed out to the southwest Pennsylvania representative that Seattle is known for great salmon, great football and great microbreweries. With that in mind, Rep. McDermott wagered Pacific Northwest Salmon and a sampler of local microbrews for Rep. Doyle and his Capitol Hill staff in the unlikely event the Steelers win.
“Steeler fans are known for the ‘terrible towel,’ and I’m so glad these will easily convert to crying towels after the Seahawks win,” McDermott added.
“In this age of rampant free agency, every member of the Steelers is committed heart and soul to this team, and Steelers fans are just as committed to them,” Congressman Doyle observed. “With this tremendous spirit and with Jerome Bettis having the home field advantage, I am certain the Steelers will bring the Lombardi Trophy back to Pittsburgh."
Finally, as a medical doctor and psychiatrist, Rep. McDermott applauded Rep. Doyle for his ability to dream an impossible dream, but gently reminded him that Seattle is known as the Emerald City and the Lombardi Trophy will shine brightly in its new Seattle home.
