Roosevelt High School Sophomore Wins 7th District Congressional Arts Competition
April 26, 2007
For Immediate Release
Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA) announced today that Jim McGowan, a sophomore at Roosevelt High School, submitted a photograph that was selected as the winning entry from the 7th Congressional District in the 26th annual US Congressional High School Art Competition. In all, 14 entries were submitted this year.
Jim McGowan's photograph entitled "Bus Stop" was shot in the University District and he described his effort this way: "I chose this picture because it has always been one of my favorites, when I look into it, I envision a Seattle I know. Seattle is infamous for rain, thus, why I blue-toned it because blue is often associated as the color of rain."
The photograph will be displayed, along with winning entries from other congressional districts, in the tunnel that connects the U.S. Capitol with the Longworth House Office Building in Washington, D.C. Rep. McDermott's Washington, D.C. office is in the Longworth building.
"This photograph is a wonderful portrayal of Seattle, the city we all love, and I look forward to sharing it with my colleagues and the thousands of Americans who visit Washington every month, and pass through the tunnel where it will be displayed," Rep. McDermott said.
Jim McGowan, a parent and his art teacher, will join Rep. McDermott in Washington, D.C., for the unveiling on June 28.
