House Recognizes May as National Foster Care Month
Chairman McDermott Leads Effort
May 6, 2009
Led by Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA), Chairman of the Income Security and Family Support Subcommittee, the House today unanimously adopted a resolution recognizing the month of May as National Foster Care Month. McDermott’s subcommittee has jurisdiction over the nation’s foster care system.
“On any given day, half a million children seek safety, comfort and assistance from our Nation’s foster care system,” Rep. McDermott said on the House floor prior to passage. He said that passing a resolution helps to draw the nation’s attention to the issue and provide “Congress with an opportunity to recognize the contributions of the unsung heroes who commit their lives to children in foster care, including foster parents who unselfishly open their homes to our most vulnerable children.”
Rep. McDermott, who also is a medical doctor and child psychiatrist, said something as simple as a House resolution can make a big difference by calling attention to the positive steps that have been taken already and the work yet to be done. For instance, last year Congress passed McDermott’s legislation, The Fostering Connections to Success and Increasing Adoptions Act, which was hailed by experts as the most significant reform of the child welfare system in 15 years. Still, other reforms are needed to help improve the lives and outcomes of America’s foster children.
“Behind every number is the face of a foster child who has the same hopes and aspirations as every other child. They need us to make those hopes and aspirations a reality.”
