Rep. McDermott Leads Delegation Effort on NOAA Decision Affecting Seattle
August 17, 2009
Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA) and Members of the Washington congressional delegation today called on the General Accountability Office to formally review the decision by NOAA to move its long-standing Seattle facility out of town and out of state. Rep. McDermott, Senator Patty Murray, Senator Maria Cantwell (who chairs the Senate Subcommittee of jurisdiction), and Representatives Inslee, Smith, Baird and Reichert signed the letter to Interim Comptroller General Gene Dodaro calling for a review of the process concerning the Marine Operations Center – Pacific (MOC-P).
Quoting from the letter, “In November 2008, NOAA initiated a Solicitation for Offers (SFO) for the lease and acquisition of its MOC-P, with the goal of acquiring the “best value” property to house its MOC-P. The competitive process involved a multi-pronged approach towards determining the best location for the MOC-P. However, serious concerns have been expressed as to the basis for the final lease award decision, in part, because it appears the SFO evaluation criteria changed.” A copy of the letter is attached.
McDermott said as the congressman who represents Seattle he was concerned and disappointed by the recent announcement, but he will withhold judgment pending an independent review of the matter and the facts. “I have serious doubts about this NOAA decision and that’s why I want the independent watchdog agency for Congress, the General Accountability Office to formally review the matter,” McDermott said.
