Rep. McDermott Calls for Commerce Secretary to Provide Information on NOAA Decision
September 4, 2009
In a strongly worded letter released for the first time, Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA) has called on Commerce Secretary Gary Locke to provide additional information behind the decision to move the Marina Operations Center from its home in Lake Union, Seattle, to Newport, Oregon.
In the letter, which is attached, Rep. McDermott notes in detail that Seattle offers significant advantages and stands squarely behind employees when he writes, “Technical considerations aside, relocation of the MOC-P facility will impose very difficult burdens upon NOAA’s Seattle employees. Many of these highly trained professionals are long-standing NOAA workers; they are committed to the work of the agency despite the challenges it presents. Many are out to sea for the better part of the year, and relocating their home port will impose significant additional strain on their families.”
McDermott said the decision to move also raises serious environmental concerns associated with construction and dredging required in Newport and concludes the decision “…has resulted in a most unsatisfactory result for the people of Seattle and for NOAA’s valued local contingent.”
