Several times a year, Jim McDermott offers unpaid internship opportunities in his Washington D.C. and Seattle offices to young people who are interested in seeing first-hand how our government works.

Congressman McDermott and Interns

An internship in Washington, D.C. provides an opportunity to work with a congressional staff, attend committee hearings and markups, observe the House in session, and learn about the daily operations of Congress, while enhancing an understanding of the legislative process and national issues. An internship in Seattle provides an opportunity to attend constituent meetings, learn about the legislative process, participate in constituent services, and experience the daily operations of a congressional district office.

Because we receive more applications than the number of available positions, we encourage applicants to submit their information as early as possible. This allows either office the time to properly review applications and also affords time for those seeking a position in Washington DC to make the necessary housing and travel arrangements.

Applicants must be an undergraduate or graduate college student who has completed at least one year of college and should posses an interest in the legislative process and in helping constituents, as well as strong writing and communication skills.

If an applicant will be participating in a formal program directed by their school, we ask that they indicate what specific requirements the program would make of the office. If their school does not offer a formal intern program, they may wish to speak to an advisor about the possibility of receiving independent study credit for the internship.

If you would like to be considered for a position, please submit to the appropriate office the following information as a complete packet:

  1. Cover letter explaining your interest,
  2. A current resume
  3. Letters of reference
  4. The Year and school term or the dates you are be available.
