    7/2/2008 Character and Sportsmanship – The Winning Combination for Youth and High School Sports

    In February, the U.S. Congress held hearings that exposed the prevalence of steroid use among the ranks of professional athletes.  As a former volunteer coach, and a father of two sons who were heavily involved in sports growing up, I am deeply concerned about the culture that these findings have uncovered and the effect that they will have on the athletic goals and dreams of our nation’s young people.  What message does this behavior send to our young athletes?  What do we tell our players and our children when the actions of these role models don’t display the type of sportsmanship and good character that is so central to their development both as athletes and as people?   As Co-Founder and Co-Chairman of the Congressional Caucus on Youth Sports, I understand the importance of keeping the focus of youth sports on the principles of good character development, sportsmanship, healthier lifestyles, and fun.
