McNULTY NAMED CHAIRMAN OF SOCIAL SECURITY PANEL (Washington, DC): Congressman Michael R. McNulty (D-Green Island) was today named Chairman of the Subcommittee on Social Security of the House Ways and Means Committee. McNulty will be one of only six Ways and Means subcommittee chairs. While the House Democratic Caucus must ratify the selection, the appointment appears certain because no other member of the committee is challenging him for the post. "This is a great honor for me, for New York State, and for my district. I look forward to working with my colleagues across the aisle to strengthen Social Security and ensure that this program, which provides crucial retirement benefits to millions of Americans, is available for many generations to come," McNulty said. The Subcommittee on Social Security deals with matters which relate to the Social Security statute, Social Security benefits, and the Social Security Trust Fund. This will be McNulty's nineteenth year in Congress and his fourteenth year serving on the House Ways and Means Committee which -- in addition to Social Security -- has jurisdiction over Taxation, Human Services, Health Care, and Trade. He previously served on the House Armed Services Committee, the House International Relations Committee, the House Small Business Committee, and the former House Committee on Post Office and Civil Service.
